The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), in collaboration with the Government of Tamil Nadu, organized a large-scale Beach Cleaning Drive at Kanyakumari beach, Kanyakumari Distt Beach on 20th September 2025. The initiative was part of the “Seva Parv” campaign, commemorating International Coastal Clean-up Day (ICCD) 2025.
The programme aimed to raise awareness about marine pollution, coastal conservation, and the urgent need for sustainable environmental practices. The event drew enthusiastic participation from local communities, school children, representatives of local self-governments, government officials, environmental organizations, and educational institutions.
A total of 475 volunteers took part in the clean-up, collecting nearly 31.0 kg of marine litter and waste. The debris primarily consisted of plastic materials and discarded fishing nets, glass and rubber items etc.
Alongside the clean-up, the event also featured public awareness activities and community engagement programmes. The drive concluded with all participants taking the Green Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable living.

| Description | The District Collector, Kanniyakumari District chaired the gathering. An awareness speech on SUP ban, mitigation of Coastal Pollution was delivered by the DEE, TNPCB and by the District Collector among the public. A Manjappai kit containing T-shirt, cap, gloves, mask were distributed among all the participants. A rally was flagged off by the District Collector. Also awareness on Meendum Manjappai was created among the public through âThappattamâ. Around 475 college and school students, tourist participated in the event. Volunteers from NGC, NGO, District Disaster Management were also participated in the event. A dedicated medical team was also present during the event. A massive clean-up drive was carried out along the Kanniyakumari coast and around 31 kg of waste were collected during the drive. The collected waste were handed over to the Kanniyakumari Municipality for further disposal. Prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners of various schools and colleges and to the sanitary workers. (Competitions conducted on the theme âMitigation of marine pollution). Stalls on alternate to plastic were also displayed by the Self Help Group of the District. Selfie point and Signature campaign were also placed in the venue as per the Boardâs instructions.
